Kindergarten/Extended Day

The Kindergarten/Extended Day program at Naudain Montessori Academy fosters qualities such as initiative, concentration, self-discipline, a sense of order, persistence in completing a task, responsibility, creative self-expression and a love of learning.

The Importance of the 3-Year Montessori Cycle & the Montessori Kindergarten Year:

The primary Montessori program is designed as a three-year cycle. Ideally children from 3 – 6 years old stay with the same teacher right through their kindergarten year.

THE 3RD YEAR IS WHEN IT ALL COMES TOGETHER

The third year, or Montessori kindergarten/Extended Day year, is when all the learning that has taken place in the previous two years reaches fruition and a child’s knowledge begins to fall into place. Your child will be challenged to reach his/her potential by his/her Montessori teacher who knows your child incredibly well. Because of this, the teacher can provide exactly what is needed next.

Children build upon what they have learned, experience immense academic and social growth and their skill level dramatically increases when they are given the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge within the Montessori classroom.

Third year students are ready to explode into more complex learning and discovery. They are given opportunity to work with a wealth of new and interesting materials. They are guided to take on more complex work, begin to learn time management skills and have an increased set of expectations and privileges in the classroom.

These older children also reinforce their academic skills by helping another child, a well-known way to reinforce knowledge. Additionally, this boosts their self-confidence knowing that they are able to take something they've learned to help others.

THEY BECOME THE LEADERS OF THE CLASSROOM

Your child has been looking forward to being one of the “big kids” in the classroom. This is their opportunity to be the oldest in the program. Therefore, when he/she is put into a school where the kindergartners are looked upon as being the youngest in the school, his/her cycle of maturing is interrupted. It is especially important for the child who is a younger sibling at home to be given the opportunity to shine as being one of the oldest and a leader. This year of leadership gives a child a great amount self-esteem and intellectual confidence.

A CONTINUOUS AND CONSISTENT EDUCATION

A key advantage of staying at our school for the entire 3-year cycle is that your child’s teacher already knows your child very well. No time is lost at the beginning of the year trying to assess him/her. Be sure to speak to your child’s teacher about kindergarten during conferences. The gift of this third year can never be taken away and it sets up a child for future academic and social success.

THE BENEFITS AS EXPRESSED BY THE AMERICAN MONTESSORI SOCIETY

As you plan for your child’s future schooling we encourage you to view a video from American Montessori Society. This video should provide more information about the benefits of having your child stay in a Montessori classroom for his or her pivotal kindergarten year.
